The five Micronesian members of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) have officially withdrawn their membership of the PIF after the Micronesian Candidate from Marshall Islands’ Gerald Zackio lost the SG vote to Polynesian candidate, former PM of Cook Islands Henry Puna.
The Micronesia Presidents Summit made up of the President of the Republic of the Federation States of Micronesia, the President of Kiribati, the President of the Republic of Marshall Islands, the President of Nauru and the President of the Republic of Palau convened a virtual meeting on 8th February 2021 and released a statement noting their disappointment.
The Micronesia Presidents expressed unity and solidarity and restated that their position remains with the Mekreos Communique to honour an unwritten gentleman’s agreement to rotate the secretary general role by sub-region.
The statement read: “The Micronesian Presidents collectively expressed great dissappointed with the PIF SG appointment process. The Micronesian Presidents jointly agreed to forthwith initiate the formal process of the the withdrawal from the PIF respecting their national processes and will act swiftly like the Republic of Palau.”
This is a developing story.
